Urban Poetry - Carmen Wakeford

Carmen Wakeford is a contemporary digital artist from the East Rand of Gauteng Province, South Africa. She explores the beauty of colour, shape and form to create poetic symbols of contemporary life. She seeks to create art that evokes both joy and love and spends hours exploring colour palettes, crafting and combining shapes and forming playful, thoughtful and meaningful compositions. She brings beauty to the mundane experiences of urban living that often is overlooked.

In this latest series called 'Urban Poetry', Carmen hopes to inspire and offer the viewer a colourful and positive escape, as for her the transformative power of art is undeniable, since it is through her art that she now emerges confidently into the age of digital art offering her artworks in limited edition prints on archival canvas.

I was born in 1967 in Ficksburg, in the Orange Free State, and lived on a farm called Fraaiuitsig until school going age. Farm life, in those early years, gave me the freedom to explore and get to know nature and her seasons intimately. I'm sure this is why I am drawn to the simplicity of life and return to nature time and time again to gain perspective and healing.

My passion for art was established during my high school years at Pietermaritzburg Girl's High School, and for many years since I've used acrylics as my medium. More recently, I've begun to enjoy the process of creating digital composites and soon realized my photomontages lacked the flair and colour I'm comfortable expressing. For me, life devoid of colour is no life at all, although I do also love creating images that are more serene.

My love of photographs which has now become my medium was passed down from my father, a photographer in his spare time. He took a photograph of me running on Durban beach just out of toddler phase in which he masterfully captured my reflection and my shadow in the shine of the backwash. I treasure this photo dearly. This image to me, is a representation of the present, the past and the future. It reminds me to be conscious of everything. To work at keeping life in balance in order to maintain my positive outlook as this, I believe, is my contribution to society. I hope you find something in my artistic expression that will inspire you to find beauty wherever you look and that you'll experience the depth of consideration and care I wish to pass on through the images I create.
