Unfolding the Silent Pages

Growing up on a sugar farm in KwaZulu-Natal, Thea was captivated by her visual world from a young age. The colours, textures, and rhythms of that environment continue to shape her work, with memories of her childhood kitchen and flower gardens frequently appearing in her paintings. Her formal journey began with art in school, followed by studies in fashion design, an Art Diploma from The Open Window, and a BVA Degree through UNISA.
Thea works across various substrates, including ceramics, and exhibits in galleries throughout South Africa, such as the Johann van Heerden Gallery, Showroom Art Gallery, and Art B. Currently, her work is featured in the "Van Horison tot Horison" exhibition at La Motte Ateljee in Franschhoek.
"Drawing has become my favourite outlet," she says. "I incorporate most of my drawings into paintings, etchings, or ceramics. I began a daily drawing practice a few years ago; focusing on faces is a fantastic challenge-a subject that offers endless opportunities for exploration because of the subtle nuances in expression, lighting, and structure."
