The pool: a place of ambiguous quietness

"In this exhibition of paintings of swimming pools, which flows from the small room in Art Lover's Gallery into the adjacent Trent Gallery, I have looked more closely at the ambiguity of a pool of water. Water seems to act as a receptacle of feeling, a place of changing moods and dispositions.
In certain paintings I have explored the notion of the pool as a place set apart, a sacred and circumscribed space with distinct potency, an almost palpable atmosphere of a spirit presence.
In others the derelict, neglected condition of the pool touches on those feelings of sadness and loss. The pool is a daily tomb, collecting leaf litter and other drowned debris on its floor.
There are also paintings in this exhibition where I explore an enveloping sense of wellbeing and exhilaration, where the pool glows with incandescent light and a breeze plays over the water's surface. In these works the pool becomes the life-giving fountain at the centre of paradise.
There are a few paintings in this exhibition where the nourishing, organic quality of a natural ecosystem in a pond is relished. In these, the water thickened by micro-organisms to a gelatinous mucus, is like nourishing milk. It is the metaphorical richness of water and pools that entices me back to painting it again and again."
Born in December 1966, in the Highveld town of Witbank, as it was then known. I attended the local English primary school, Robert Caruthers and later the Pretoria Art, Ballet and Music School from which I matriculated in 1984. Thereafter, I went to Rhodes University to study Fine Art. After a year, I decided that Durban Technikon would better suit my temperament and interests. I completed a Diploma in Fine Art with Drawing and Painting majors in 1988. I went on to study towards a Higher Diploma in Fine Art, which I completed at the end of 1989. While living in Durban, I worked as a private painting and drawing tutor for adult students, and as an arts and crafts teacher to groups of children until 1997. When I then relocated to Pretoria, I continued with this form of self-employment and in December 2015 I completed my M.Tech Fine Art at Tshwane University of Technology, presenting a dissertation, 'The pool motif in selected South African Arcadian paintings' and an exhibition of twelve paintings of the suburban swimming pool.
Since the completion of my M Tech degree, I have been appointed as a support tutor teaching painting to second- and third-year Fine Arts students at TUT, and I teach drawing to first- and second-year Visual Arts students at UP. Recently I have been appointed to teach Figure drawing to first year students at TUT.
I have participated in various exhibitions and competitions since 1991 to date.
