The digital portraits are a combination of self-portraits and portraits of others. The multi-layered portraits explore the depth and complexity of what constitutes a person. The works focus on the emotional layers of a being and Heidegger's phenomena of the worldliness of the Being. In this case, the worldliness of the Being explores the emotional world of a being filled with suffering and trauma. These experiences contribute to the formation of a person. Some people carry their pain on their sleeves, whereas others' pain is hidden underneath layers. Finding the truth about a person is a strenuous task; however, we relate with others in the subconscious and that connection, whether with the self or others, is where we see the raw beauty of pain.
Klaré van Heerden b. 1999 is a South African artist. She visually represents the complex nature of trauma through a variety of mediums. She is a transdisciplinary artist who blends knowledge, research and skill. With her concept as her main priority, she taps into all mediums needed to serve her concept. Klaré combines sculptures, paintings, digital work, and natural found materials to express the complexities of trauma and the environment it was born in and lingers on.
Van Heerden is the recipient of the Simon Gerson Award.
