Jacques du Preez
The photography bug bit me when I got my first smart phone and I started snapping anything and everything that crossed my path or caught my eye. This has become my preferred medium since my phone, as camera, is always close at hand and therefore visual gratification is instantaneous. My interest was also piqued by the various photo editing apps that are available, making it possible to elevate an ordinary photograph to something extraordinary.
All the plants in these photographs are indigenous to Southern Africa. Most of them are reputed to have medicinal properties and I decided to pair the flowers with small antique medicine bottles when staging the photographs.
My choice of subject matter and medium for this photographs was aimed at evoking a reaction, either positive or negative but I hope that viewers find my interpretation of the selected subjects interesting and that looking at the images is a pleasurable experience.
Jacques du Preez is a Graphic Designer born and raised in Pretoria. If asked how long he's been making art he'll reply, "as long as I can remember".
Du Preez studied Graphic Design at the Pretoria Technikon (now TUT) and although he did not complete the course, he continued to learn after joining the Public Relations Department of the South African Police Service as a junior Graphic Designer in 1991. During his time at the SAPS he participated in various group exhibitions as a fine artist, with acrylic paint as his preferred medium. In 1995 he joined Independent Newspapers as a DTP operator/visualizer in the Pretoria News advertising department. A decade later he made the jump to retail advertising and joined Massmart as a Graphic Designer creating marketing material for the retail brand Builders in the home improvement DIY industry. Art as a means of expression was put on the back burner until his exhibition at Art Lovers in 2019.
