"Most of these works are sketches examining compositional possibilities to be employed in future paintings. The theme of nature (represented by animals and the natural environment) and man (represented by man made objects and environments) are sometimes shown in harmony or sometimes in conflict."
Annette Pretorius is an established fine artist, and has a PhD (Fine Arts) from the University of Pretoria and an MA (Culture and Media Management) from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Pretorius has lectured in the Department of Visual Communication at TUT and has lectured part-time at the University of Pretoria in drawing, printmaking and painting.
She has had several solo exhibitions, including 'Work on Paper' at the Pretoria Art Museum, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions - the Expo Hanover, Germany, the Expo Lisbon, Portugal, at the Montserrat Gallery, New York, at the Osaka Print Triennial, Japan and the Exposition des Ateliers Graphiques de la Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris to name but a few.
Pretorius received a Silver Medal at the Cape Town Triennial, a Printmaking award at the New Signatures Exhibition and a L`Aigle d`Argent at the 5e Exposition du Grand Prix International d`Arts Plastiques de la Ville de Nice, France.
Pretorius' work is represented in various collections - in private collections in Belgium, Germany, South Africa, United States of America and the Netherlands. At art museums, such as the South African National Gallery in Cape Town, the Rembrandt Art Foundation in Stellenbosch, Pretoria Art Museum, Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein, among others. In corporate collections at ABSA, Armscor, CSIR, Department of National Education, Human Sciences Research Counsel, Rand Aksep Bank, Sasol and Telkom and in international collections at Habikino City Government, Osaka, Japan and the International Monetary Fund, Washington, United States of America.
