Seasons of Light

Johan van Coller is a Pretoria-based, self-taught artist whose distinctive palette-knife technique has become synonymous with his name. Working primarily in oil on gesso board, Johan explores the South African landscape with a sensitivity that merges impressionistic form with expressive emotion. His work balances the tangible with the spiritual, translating the familiar terrain of veld, trees and light into textured meditations on creation and renewal.
Throughout his career, Johan has moved between figure studies, still lifes, and landscapes, developing a language of colour and texture that is both deliberate and intuitive. His recent body of work reflects a turning point. A movement away from realism toward expressive abstraction, where the focus is less on depicting the land and more on revealing its spirit. The result is a conversation between observation and faith. A landscape painted not just as it appears, but as it feels in communion with the Creator.
Johan's work has been exhibited in several prominent galleries, including Chris Tugwell and Tina Skukan Galleries in Pretoria, Lindy van Niekerk Gallery and Dante Art in Cape Town, and The Stellenbosch Gallery.
Rooted in his Christian faith, Johan dedicates his art to God. He believes strongly that his talent is a gift from God and that all glory belongs to God.
