Hannah Kempe
Premonition
24 April 2020
"My process explores the experiential nature of the subconscious within the automatic
process. I draw by watching my hand move, trying to remain absent from the creation. The
works that form act as messages and stories of my own subconscious, forewarning and
manifesting universal archetypes."
Hannah Kempe's art often deals in themes of human nature, and human interactions with the natural world. She is interested in depicting the exploration of collective human consciousness, narratives and interpretation of sensory experience. Her interest in mark making originated in her interest in various print techniques. The process of making is indicative to the development of her subject matter.
Hannah Kempe (born 1996) currently lives in Johannesburg. She has concluded her Bachelors in Fine Arts at The University of Pretoria in 2018.
Kempe was a finalist at the 2019 Sasol New Signatures, the 2019 Thami Mnyele and the 2017 PPC Imaginarium. She was the winner of the 2019 Culture Leader Fine arts category as well as the 2016 Best under 25 winner at the Art Lovers Gallery technical skill competition. She has also participated in a number of group exhibitions in Johannesburg and Pretoria, at Arty Bolloks, No End Contemporary, Artitis, Turbine Art Fair 2017, Anton van Wouw Gallery, Art Lovers Gallery, Trent Gallery, Fried Contemporary and Johann van Heerden's Art Gallery.
Kempe's work investigates the narrative of line, text, mark and colour. Her work is largely process-based and explores various mediums where drawing as a mode of narration is considered. She is currently producing and examining the experiential nature of the subconscious within the automatic process.
