Light to Life

"Plastic waste is an increasingly pressing and global concern. I reuse poli flex t-shirt vinyl to produce art. I combine abstract pieces to form vivid figures. Light blows life into my work. With editing software, black becomes gold and shadows are enhanced. One might appreciate a familiar image from a distance or at an angle, only to develop a different perspective or merely value a balance of colour.
The subject will never exist again. Swept aside, only to form part of a new composition. All except for one piece accompanying my signature and the year. The new owner's souvenir of what was and what could be. We're all given some great and awkward pieces. Let's not waste any of it."
From a young age, creating and building things was how Lewis Meiring developed an understanding of the world around him. In school, he took part in the Pretoria Eisteddfod's yearly art competition and became the overall high-school winner at age 15. Meiring became an Industrial Engineer to see how he can contribute to making parts of industry fit together more effectively. He was a finalist in the Eskom Lighting Design competition's junior category in 2014 and won the University of Pretoria's Life is Light art competition in 2015, which was also his first year of studies. Now, working full time, he is able to afford the opportunity to create artistically on creating logically. Aside from running a T-shirt printing business, he uses the printing medium to create art.
