Joyful Illumination of the Unwanted
by
Deidré Marshall
30 June 2023
Deidré Marshall is a conceptual artist whose signature style developed through a multidisciplinary approach in her artmaking processes. In the application and abundant use of colour in her painting, printmaking and mixed-media fiber sculptures, she wants to share both the crazy happy and dark despair of her inner world through the manifestation of its physical form in concrete reality. By taking a conceptual approach in her artmaking, she comments on society's static paradigm of success which negates any 'undesirable' state of being. With her work she aims to illuminate the unwanted.
Marshall is a Unisa Visual Arts Graduate, a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and lives in Cape Town with her wife, two Gen Z zoomers, and three Afrikanis furkids in a cross-cultural household. Being a recycled teenager, she now has the time and means to focus on her art career, fulfilling a life long dream.
She has participated in various group exhibitions and a pop-up collaboration in Cape Town and her work is represented in private collections locally as well as in Australia and the USA.
