Nhlonipho Mchunu: In His Name

”In His Name” is a solo exhibition of ten artworks created with black fineliner and acrylic paint on paper. These works tell quiet yet powerful stories, blending African culture, religion, and raw emotion. Some are calm and full of beauty, others are dark, heavy, and unsettling. Together, they explore the silent battle between old traditions and foreign beliefs brought by force, faith, and fear. They hold the scars of oppression, the confusion of identity, and the quiet strength of heritage that refuses to fade.

Each piece carries echoes of the past, the spirit of ancestors, the weight of silence, and the shadows of what was done in his name. Some images feel like prayers, others like unspoken cries. Symbols from African traditions appear beside fragments of imported religion, sometimes clashing, sometimes blending. These artworks invite you to slow down, to feel deeply, and to ask: What have we lost? What do we still believe? And what parts of us remain untouched, still sacred, still ours?

Born in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Nhlonipho Mchunu is a visual artist whose work delves into culture, heritage, and hidden stories. A graduate of the Durban University of Technology, Nhlonipho has exhibited in multiple group shows both locally and internationally and published an art book in 2023. Known for his innovative mixed media techniques, Nhlonipho often constructs his artwork using intricate triangular shapes, blending storytelling with a bold, contemporary style that feels both timeless and thought-provoking.

Mchunu’s art challenges viewers to pause and question, often leaving them wondering, “What does this even mean?” Through layered symbolism, unexpected forms, and mixed media techniques, each piece invites personal interpretation, sparking curiosity and introspection.
