Griet van der Meulen
The artist was born in 1956, in the province of Mpumalanga, where she has a small gallery in Graskop. The gallery mainly serves as a platform for local artists, who otherwise would not have the opportunity to exhibit their work. Her own work is also on permanent exhibition there.
She has a mentorship program at the gallery for promising African artists, giving them guidance and opportunities to exhibit.
In 1979 Van der Meulen obtained a BA degree in Afrikaans Literature and History of Art from the University of Pretoria, and a Post graduate Diploma in Museum Sciences at the University of Pretoria in 1980. In 1991 she completed a Fine Arts Diploma at the University of Technology Pretoria, and in 2000 she attended the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town and the Ottawa School of Art in Ottawa, Canada. In 2002 she received an Honours degree in Fine Arts at the University of South Africa.
The artist received the Schweikerdt prize for excellence in painting at the University of Technology in 1991, and in 2001 a Residency in Dortmund, Germany, sponsored by Mpumalanga Government and German Frauen Kunstforum.
Van der Meulen has taken part in numerous exhibitions, locally as well as in Canada and Germany, and her work is represented in various private collections in South Africa, Germany, Canada, France, Spain, Korea, Holland and Belgium.
She also has work in the public collection of the Government of Mpumalanga, on permanent exhibition in the Government buildings of Mpumalanga, and she received a commission from the National Capital Commission of Canada to paint a series of murals exhibited on Confederation Square Ottawa, Canada.
